What a swamp buggy is used for
These unique machines are built with a basic amphibious undercarriage design that gives the equipment the ability to float in and propel itself through water.
The machine is generally split at the slew ring and mounted directly on to the floating pontoons. They usually have an operating weight of around 20-25 ton and are often fitted with long reach boom and a larger fuel tank which doubles as extra counterweight.
These machines are used for dredging in swamps and river deltas, and where normal excavators are not able to work due to soft ground conditions.
How amphibious excavators work
The floating pontoons are built to make the excavator float, so the machine can work in riverine areas, dredging marine channels and for other work such as pipeline construction.
Any excavator make can be fitted on to pontoons, on which the machine “tracks” through the water using the laths to give it traction.
