Why you need a used roller
Every layer of a road needs smoothing during the grading process, from the soil, to the asphalt or tarmac, and this is where rollers are needed – to flatten any raised areas into the road so it is completely even.
Single drum rollers are used for soil compacting due to their improved traction, these can either be smooth drum or vibrating (fitted with padfoot shells) for compacting loose/soft surfaces, such as rubble, soil, and mixed ground, while twin drum rollers are used for asphalt or tarmac. Pneumatic tyred rollers are perfect for finishing the wearing course on roads.
You can also get many attachments for rollers such as dozer blades to dig the ground up, and chipping spreaders, which increase the life of the road by making it more hard-wearing.
In hot countries, rollers are sometimes fitted with a canopy instead of a cab, which costs less but can make the work very uncomfortable without air conditioning.
Popular used roller brands and models
Caterpillar design and manufacture a range of single drum self-propelled rollers, and also twin drum rollers for asphalt. Other manufacturers of compactors are Dynapac, who build Dynapac self-propelled rollers Bomag and Hamm (part of the Wirtgen group).

Bomag are the manufacturers of the widely-used Bomag BW213 13ton roller, which can be supplied in smooth drum or padfoot configurations. The W216 hav an operating weight of 16 tons and this machine is a pad food drum which increases the compaction rate on soil.
Other popular rollers are Bomag BW120, Hamm HD12VV, Hamm HD12, Hamm HD13, and Hamm GRW15/18.
