Construction of Uganda’s Kibaale Road hit by delays

14 September 2016

The construction of Uganda’s Kibaale Road is set to be hit by delays following shortage of funds Mr Zhou Jiangiang, the project manager for China Communications Construction Company has said. The 107km road from Mubende, Kakumiro, Kibaale and Kagadi districts is likely to experience delays. According to Jiangiang. The government of Uganda has not compensated the victims despite the fact that the project is set to kick off in October. He said that the victims are likely to block the construction of Uganda’s Kibaale Road unless they are compensated. Mr Zhou said they fear resistance that would come from uncompensated victims of the project expected to start next month. “We would like to call upon the government to ensure that they compensate the locals with the agreed funds so that we can start the project on time,” he added. He made the remarks at the weekend at a health camp organised by CCCC in collaboration with Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) in Karuguuza Town. President Museveni commissioned the Shs484.4b road project early this year. The funds were got from the Chinese government through a loan. Mr Jiangiang asked the government to speed up the compensation to avoid interruption. Mr Asaph Tayebwa, the Kibaale District UNRA project manager, said they were yet to get funds for compensation, but promised the issues would be solved soon. “We also don’t want this project to stale due to compensation. We are working with district authorities to have this matter sorted out,” Mr Tayebwa said. Though the official said that they have made an official appeal to the government to ensure that they carry out their mandate if they want to see the project completed on time. Upon completion Uganda’s Kibaale Road is expected to boost trade.
