Morocco lands global slot in renewable energy

7 June 2016

Morocco is currently on top of the table when it comes to renewable energy in the middle East due to their aggressive steps.

According to the latest report released by Renewable Energy Policy Network for the 21st Century (REN21) in 2016 the company had the best working solar power by 2015.

Morocco was ranked number one in Africa in terms of overall capacity at the end of 2015 while it only stood behind Spain, the United States and India, but its ongoing investment could soon push it up the rankings. Among the projects that have been ranked to the best include the lately inaugurated Noor 1 CSP plant which is one of the largest such plant in the Middle East and North Africa and in the whole continent which is being built by Saudi Arabia’s ACWA Power.

ACWA Power, together with 5% Spanish partners ARIES and TSC, was awarded a $1bn contract to build the 160MW CSP plant near the desert frontier town of Ouarzazate, Morocco back in 2012.

This has made the country outshine when it comes to renewable energy hence beating up many struggling counters to generate renewable energy.

The company won one of the most prestigious contracts after beating three major groups which including Abu Dhabi’s largest national energy company TAQA.

The plant has an array of 12m-high parabolic mirrors are focused on a steel pipeline carrying a ‘heat transfer solution’ (HTF) that is warmed to 393°C then mixed with water to create steam that turns energy-generating turbines.

The HTF is made up of a synthetic thermal oil solution that is also pumped towards a heat tank containing molten salts that can store heat energy for three hours, allowing the plant to power homes into the night.
